Library Associate I

The Town of Sterling seeks a qualified candidate to fill a 32 hours per week, grade 2 benefited position of Library Associate I at the Conant Public Library. The position will begin on July 1, 2024.

Primary responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
● Provides customer service at the circulation desk and other service points
● Creates and facilitates programs for people of all ages both at the library and off-site
● Writes press releases for programs
● Maintains program statistics
● Offers personalized Reader’s Advisory
● Catalogs and processes materials

The successful candidate will be an integral member of the library’s program planning team who creates and facilitates programs for patrons of all ages and provides excellent customer service during daily circulation desk shifts. Receives program feedback and maintains monthly program statistics. Catalogs children’s materials as well as Library of Things items.

Knowledge, Ability, and Skill:
Good knowledge of grammar and spelling. Computer operations such as Microsoft Office and other applications. Basic knowledge of library operations and databases used in a library setting. Skills using technology are essential, and experience with the Evergreen ILS is an asset.

Ability to interact in a positive and effective manner with employees and the public.

Ability to work independently. Ability to execute oral and written instructions in a precise manner. Ability to operate a variety of office equipment including a computer, printer, copy machine, cash register. Ability to understand and use library and office computer software. Impeccable multitasking and organizational skills are necessary.

Excellent written communication, email & social media, and telephone skills required. A successful candidate should have sound judgment, motor operating skills and be able to maintain effective staff and customer relations.

Physical and Mental Requirements:
Work is performed in an open work space setting, subject to quiet and moderate noise. More than 2/3rds of the time is spent standing, walking, stooping, sitting or reaching with hands and arms. More than 2/3rds of the time is spent using hands to finger, handle or feel library materials. Employee is required to talk or listen on a regular basis. Frequently
the Employee will lift up to 10 pounds, occasional lifting is required up to 30 pounds. Normal vision is required.

Equipment used includes computers, printers, barcode scanners, hand tools and office machines. A valid driver’s license is necessary in order to attend meetings and other library events.

The employee is subject to a Criminal Offenders Record Inquiry (CORI).

Minimum qualifications: An Associate’s Degree in Liberal Arts or a related field; one to three years of prior work experience, preferably in a library; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

The schedule for this position is Monday and Wednesday 12pm-8pm; Tuesday and Thursday 9:30am to 5:30pm; and a Saturday rotation. Weekday hours are adjusted when scheduled to work a Saturday.

Salary range is $17.10 - $20.01 an hour depending on qualifications.
